According to GMInsideNews.com, an independent website, General Motors will begin selling the Chevy Cruze with a diesel-engine option for the 2013 model year. It will be the company’s first diesel-powered passenger car in U.S. in decades. Workers at the Lordstown, Ohio, assembly plant where the Cruze is built were told about the diesel model last week.  Now, we know that this will not be available for purchse in the U.S for another year or two, but if you are looking for a Chevrolet for sale in Glenwood Springs, look no further than Vista Chevrolet.  Here are a few specs that we have received on the new Cruze.

With well over 200 ft-lbs of torque (compared to less than 150 in the Cruze Eco), a model powered by a 2.0-liter turbodiesel could handily beat the performance of the 1.4-liter turbo gas in the Cruze Eco model, though at a likely cost premium of several thousand dollars. The key to the added cost will be the route GM takes to reduce diesel emissions in order to meet California standards and sell the model nationwide.

Sources within the Lordstown, Ohio assembly plant responsible for piecing the compact sedan together have confirmed that a diesel Cruze will be built for 2013. If that’s not enough to wipe out the skepticism off your person, GM says that additional sources within The General’s engineering team have confirmed that an oil-burning Cruze is on the company’s schedule.

Production is rumored to kick off on the project at some point next year.

There’s even rumor that GM is currently testing diesel Chevrolet Cruze models around the greater Detroit area right now (keep your eyes out for a sedan that might be wrapped in all black.)  While no power or fuel economy numbers are available at the moment, GM is expected to make use of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine for the new model. That would be the same lump found in the Holden Cruze CDX, which turns out 147 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque with up to 34 miles per gallon combined.

General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) launched a new commercial on Thanksgiving Day last year that had a theme called “We all fall down.” Towards the end of the ad, it says “Thank you for helping us get back up.” GM has its fair share of critics and cheerleaders. Some people are outraged by the bail-out and some people are gung-ho about it. Personally I like it when large companies that provide jobs to a lot of American workers make a come-back.

GM’s ad that ran on Thanksgiving day thanking American taxpayers was exactly how you do a touching corporate commercial. No folksy-sounding CEO making ridiculous claims they’ve paid back taxpayers. No images of the Chevy Volt and trees. Just “Animal House” and Popeye.

The ad, entitled “Comeback,” is a 60 second commercial with no voiceover, featuring back to back serious and comic images of failure on screen followed by images of recovery, or comeback. The ad closes with the words: “We all fall down. Thank you for helping us get back up,” which to me was very effective by touching our emotions, helping us feel a part of their unfortunate times, and making us proud for helping a long standing American company recover and produce more jobs for our citizens.

The commercial reminded me that we all face failure from time to time, but, with the support of family & friends, and the drive to get back up, we will live to see another day – hopefully a successful one.

The 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 was a performance monster, featuring an all-aluminum engine displacing 427 cubic inches that was originally intended for racing. Just 69 units were built, and they are highly coveted by collectors today. Perhaps it shouldn’t come as a surprise, then, that Chevrolet chose to resurrect this classic moniker for what it is calling the fastest and most technologically advanced Camaro ever built.

At this point, specifications are still preliminary, but Chevrolet is estimating that its supercharged and intercooled 6.2-liter LSA V8 engine will put out around 550 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque. Those ponies will be sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission using a dual-disc clutch that’s necessary to properly harness all those horses. There’s also a dual-mode exhaust system that alters the sound level and character in response to engine rpm.  This will make the 2011 Camaro look like a turtle next to a rabbit!

Chevrolet tells us that its goal was to build “a Camaro intended to reach optimal lap times on top road-racing circuits and excellent driving dynamics on the street.” To that end, the 2012 Camaro ZL1 will be fitted with a new electric power steering system and Magnetic Ride Control that will offer both Tour and Sport modes.

Naturally, there’s an updated body kit to differentiate the ZL1 from lesser machines. Most notable are the redesigned fascia that features a front splitter, vertical fog lamps and air intakes designed for brake cooling. There’s also a new aluminum hood with a raised, satin black-finish carbon fiber insert that uses a unique air extractor that is said to increase downforce by directing oncoming air over the car. There’s also a spoiler at the rear of the car and new 20-inch aluminum wheels fitted with specially developed Goodyear Supercar F2 tires.

Chevrolet promises to have the Camaro ZL1 on dealer lots in the beginning of 2012; and we will let you know as soon as it arrives!

General Motors has officially yanked back the sheets on the newest sub-compact from Chevrolet, the 2012 Sonic. Just don’t call it the Aveo.  The five-door hatch and four-door sedan are set to be officially unveiled later today, but the Bow Tie brand has been kind enough to share the skinny on this vehicle that’s supposed to tango with the likes of the new Hyundai Elantra and the Ford Fiesta. The Sonic will be available with a standard 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, though buyers can opt up for a turbocharged 1.4-liter producing 138 horsepower, which GM underscores is 18 ponies more than the Fiesta. Shifting duties are handled by either a five-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic gearbox.

GM also put plenty of effort into the suspension by tasking the geometry gurus responsible for the Corvette’s mighty grip. Up front, the Sonic benefits from a MacPherson strut design, while a torsion beam handles suspension duties out back.

There’s also plenty design-wise to differentiate the Sonic from its homely predecessor, including a more aggressive front fascia with massive headlight arrays. Judging from the photos, the biggest changes are indoors, where a stylish cockpit replaces the bland, bargain plastics of the Aveo.

A special-edition Chevrolet Camaro Convertible will serve as the official pace car of the 2011 Indianapolis 500. Chevrolet and Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials made the announcement at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale classic auto auction, where a bidder will have the opportunity to purchase the first of 50 Indianapolis 500 Festival Committee cars.

The Chevrolet Camaro Convertible is the 22nd Chevrolet chosen to pace “The Greatest Spectacle In Racing®” and the seventh Camaro. Adding to the rich heritage is the fact that 2011 will mark the 100th anniversary of the first Indianapolis 500, as well as the centennial year of Chevrolet.

Chevrolet will donate full proceeds of the auction to the David Foster Foundation, a charity devoted to supporting families with children in need of life-saving organ transplants. David Foster, the 15-time Grammy-winning music producer and songwriter, founded the organization in his native Canada.

The pace car, along with the matching festival cars, features a Summit White exterior accented with orange stripes and door graphics. The interior is trimmed in orange leather, including front seat headrests embossed with the Indy 500 logo, along with white door panels and instrument panel trim.

The color combination is similar to the design used on the 1969 Camaro Indy pace car – replicas of which have become among the most popular Camaros in the collector world.

“It’s an honor for Chevrolet to pace the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500, especially during this landmark year,” said Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. “This is also a great opportunity for us to build on Camaro’s strong momentum, while supporting an important charity.”

“The Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Chevrolet name have long been associated with one another beginning with Arthur, Louis and Gaston Chevrolet’s participation as competitors in the Indianapolis 500,” said Indianapolis Motor Speedway President and CEO Jeff Belskus. “It is fitting in this 100th year for both brands that we reinforce that relationship through this year’s Camaro pace car, which resembles what many argue is the most famous pace car in IMS history, the 1969 Camaro. We are looking forward to seeing this car on track, pacing the greatest 33 drivers in the world on May 29.”

Chevy’s been getting schooled by Ford’s Super Duty pickups. Now the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado Heavy Duty finally boxes the frame, adds triple rate springs and offers a stupefying 20,000lb towing capacity thanks to the new Duramax diesel.

When a company does a mid-cycle refresh, they have basically three bins to throw money into: Powertrain, chassis/ frame, and body/interior. Throwing money at all three would mean an all-new product, but two of three or one out of three is usually considered a refresh. The heavy truck market is a little different than most. Buyers are interested in increased capabilities rather than fancier duds, and as a result the new Silverado HD looks pretty much the same as it’s predecessor. The only visual distinctions are more chrome on the front bumper, a slightly revised hood and “Duramax” hood badge, the end of 16″ wheels at the bottom in favor or 17-inchers and the addition of 20″ wheels at the top. It also gets hydraulic cabin mounts in the back, but that’s it. If you want a pretty new face wait two years, that’s probably when we’ll be seeing it. What’s under the skin is the important part here.

The most important change to the Silverado this year is the frame — going from a full-length C-channel design to a fully boxed frame with through-welded cross members. The frame is five times times stiffer in twisting, 92% stiffer in bending, 20% stiffer in beaming and the front subframe is 125% stiffer by itself. The rear suspension has also been upgraded, now with offset leaf springs that have more spring behind the axle than ahead of it, which works to reduce axle hop under loaded take off.

Up front the truck maintains the double wishbone suspension with an adjustable torsion bar spring to level truck height with a plow attached. It has been upgraded with a second jounce bumper and an anti-roll bar with a longer lever arm for better control with a front load. The front brakes have also been upgraded with a set of massive 14″ vented rotors clamped down on by stiffer calipers over a bigger swept area.

There’s also a significant upgrade under the hood with the fourth generation of the Duramax Diesel and Allison automatic transmission combination. The newest iteration of the Duramax shares about 40% of the parts with the last version with the remainder being slightly to significantly new. Compression ratio drops from 16.4:1 to 16.0:1, which in diesel world results in more power. The combustion chamber is fed by a new 30,000 PSI peizo-based fuel injector system. About 22 lbs was added to the block to improve block stiffness and improve NVH, and as a result the idle speed drops to about 900 RPM to reduce consumption. It’s also B20 capable now, if you want to run diesel with a bit more bio-matter than the B5 the trucks are currently capable of. They’ve also significantly reduced the amount of EGR gasses injected back into the cylinder as part of a rework of their emissions strategy and added a bigger radiator to keep everything cool.

The engine and transmission control systems have been significantly upgrade as well, which has allowed Chevy to more intelligently manage engine braking in normal operations. The turbo controller and transmission controller act in unison to create something akin to a sophisticated Jake brake for use in hilly terrain, and can be activated by a button on the center console. There’s also a hill start system that holds the brake 1.5 seconds after a release (one of the few times it makes sense to have this system).

So what’s the bottom line on this big brawler? It’s probably going to best the long-time towing and hauling champ at Ford (if we’re talking about the 2500 and 3500 pickups vs the F-250 and F-350 pickups — not the F-450) — at least until we find out the numbers on Ford’s next-gen Super Duty pickup. Payload is now 6,300 lbs, which GM expects to beat Ford and Dodge’s best numbers by 2,400 lbs. Hitch towing is a whopping 16,000 lbs on the 3500, bed-mounted hitch towing is a humongous 20,000 lbs, with an expected 1,200 lb advantage. The final point is one GM is allowed to dance around at this weight class. They’re saying the truck’s got a 36 gallon fuel tank and a range of 680 miles!

If more power is desired, Malibu 2LT and LTZ are available with the 3.6L V-6 VVT – a sophisticated, all-aluminum DOHC engine that uses variable valve technology to produce 252 horsepower (188 kW)* while delivering EPA-estimated fuel economy of 17 mpg city and 26 mpg in highway driving. It, too, is mated with a Hydra-Matic 6T70 six-speed automatic transmission.

The 2011 Malibu six-speed transmissions enable a strong balance between performance and fuel efficiency, with the six forward gears offering optimized performance at all rpm levels, as well as reduced rpm at highway cruising speeds. Lower rpm can enhance fuel economy and reduce cabin noise. The six-speed transmissions also feature TAPshift, which enables the driver to shift manually through the gears.

All Malibu powertrains are backed by GM’s five-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, the best and most comprehensive in the industry.

With its strong stance and bold proportions, the 2011 Malibu has a profile that reinforces its substantial feel. Turn-by-Turn allows consumers to talk to a live adviser, who in turn sends complete step-by-step directions to customers’ vehicles through their OnStar system. These audio directions automatically play through the vehicle’s stereo as needed, triggered by the OnStar system’s GPS capabilities. The directions also are displayed on the radio screen. 2011 Chevy Volt Battery Warranty

After years of speculation, General Motors has finally announced the terms of the warranty on the Chevrolet Volt’s lithium ion battery pack; eight years/100,000 miles.

The 16 total kwh pack stores sufficient energy in a band from roughly 30% to 80% state-of-charge to propel the car for up to 40 miles at ambient temperature and with moderate driving style.

Since first working with the LG Chem lithium-manganese spinel cells in October 2007, GM has definitively proven their safe and robust nature. In these nearly three years of testing, GM has completed more than 1 million miles of driving and 4 million hours of validation of Volt battery packs, which include exactly nine modules and 288 cells.

“The Chevrolet Volt’s batteries have exceeded our performance targets and are ready to hit the road,” said Micky Bly, GM executive director, global electrical systems. “Our customers are making a commitment to technology that will help reduce our dependence on petroleum. In turn, we are making a commitment to our customers to deliver the highest standards for value, safety, quality, performance and reliability for an unprecedented eight years/100,000 miles.”

GM stresses the following key features of the Volt’s battery that allow this unprecedented in the industry warranty:

Thermal Management: the intrinsic thermal management system allows the pack and car to operate flawlessly from -13 degrees Fahrenheit (-25 C) and as high as 122 degrees Fahrenheit (+50 C). In cold weather the cells are warmed by the generator and in warm weather they are chilled.

Diagnostics: there are more than 500 diagnostic tests on the pack that run 10 times per second. 85 percent ensure the pack is operating safely, 15 percent ensure durability.

Cell design: the LG chemistry ensures high power and long life.

Energy Management: by not fully charging or discharging the battery ensures the longest possible life.

GM is on track to deliver the Volt to customers later this year.

“We’re moving fast to deliver for the customer and ensure the Volt launch stays on track,” said Nancy Laubenthal, plant manager of the Brownstown Battery Plant. “Last August we announced the investment in the Brownstown facility and in January built our first completed battery pack. Now we are finishing pre-production batteries and soon we will begin building production batteries for Chevrolet Volts that will be delivered to dealers before the end of the year.”

• 100,000 mile/5-year transferable Engine Limited Warranty (for Range Extender)
